Jesus in the Beginning

Kellye Schiffner Carver

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. - John 1

Our reading today has been called "the profoundest page in the New Testament" by preacher and theologian Alexander Maclaren. That's quite high praise! Let's dig in to better understand why John's writing and the introduction to his book are wonderfully powerful and insightful.

The First One

Nicki Koziarz

His mother said to the servants, 'Do whatever he tells you.' - John 2:1-12

I'm not sure there's a greater joy as a mom than to see one of my children do what I knew they could do. Whether it's a grade on a test, an athletic achievement or another accomplishment, there's something special about seeing them become who they were created to be.

The Wrong Advantage

Nicki Koziarz

Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing. - John 2:13-25

It would be easy to read today's verses and think we are encountering such a different version of Jesus than we saw in yesterday's reading.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son … - John 3

It is in the dark, quiet moments of the night that the questions come. The day replays in my head. Conversations echo. Did I say the right thing? Events play back like an old film. Why did this happen? What do I make of all this?

Spiritually Dehydrated

Titania Paige

Jesus said to her, 'Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.' - John 4

As we open our Bibles to John 4, it blows my mind to picture a sweaty, exhausted Messiah longing for a drink from Jacob's well. (John 4:6) I don't know about you, but it's relieving to know that Jesus took on the physical limitations of humanity. (Hebrews 2:10-14)

The Greatest Mercy

Alexandra Hoover

But he answered them, 'The man who healed me, that man said to me, "Take up your bed, and walk." - John 5

Mercy: we all need it and look for it. There isn't a day that goes by that our hearts, minds and bodies don't need a Savior who gives endless mercy and compassion. But the reality is that as humans, we forget mercy is an overflow of God's love and grace for us. And we look for mercy handed to us in earthly ways and often miss what God is doing because our sin blinds us. In John 5, we get to see God's mercy, and how we often miss seeing it because of the pride in our hearts.

Back and forth he goes. Sometimes it seems like only minutes separate his visits. It's become a place my oldest boy spends a lot of his time lately … the kitchen.

The Most Important Question Ever

Denise J. Hughes

Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Christ? But we know where this man comes from, and when the Christ appears, no one will know where he comes from. - John 7:1-31

Have you ever played the game "20 Questions"? It's a guessing game where friends try to identify a person or an object with 20 questions or less. The first one to correctly identify the person or object wins.

Streams of Living Water

Denise J. Hughes

On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, 'If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, "out of his heart will flow rivers of living water."' - John 7:32-53

Living in Southern California, I'm well-acquainted with drought and desert-like conditions where water-conservation is a part of everyday life. So, when I took a trip to the Northeast and stood next to Niagara Falls, I marveled at the millions of tons of water gushing over the curved ridge in endless supply. This magnificent river has continued to rush forward and fall below — for years! — in a never-ending flow.

He answered, 'Whether he is a sinner I do not know. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.' - John 9

Recently, I sat mesmerized in church as evangelist Nick Vujicic shared his testimony. Nick was born without arms and legs and struggled with depression as a child, but in middle school, he read the story of Jesus healing the blind man in John's Gospel and realized his life had a grander purpose.

So Jesus again said to them, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. - John 10

How many doors do you walk through on a daily basis? Probably too many to keep track of. If you're like me, you go in and out of so many doors every day you don't even think about it.

Anticipation was building in the ancient world. Jesus' life and momentum of followers seemed to set the stage for a victorious overthrow of the current Roman Empire, making way for Israel to take control.

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. - John 13

I grew up thinking that my love and kindness would be enough to love others well. But it wasn't until I began to feel the weight of brokenness that I understood the insufficiency of my ability to love well. It was only going to be through the love of Christ that I was ever going to love, forgive or serve others well and truthfully.

Night had fallen. The disciples and Jesus had just finished their last supper together. I don't know about you, but being hated is not on my top 10 list of greatest experiences in life. I'd much prefer a friend's loving embrace over the hostility of an enemy. A high-five from a co-worker over a rude gesture from an angry driver. Don't you agree?

I wonder if anyone had parents like mine who from time to time would say, "This is for your own good"? "This" could range from a punishment for disobedience to a denial of something I desperately wanted. It wasn't uncommon for my parents and me to have differing opinions on how "this" was for my good.

I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. - John 17

Have you ever heard the old saying that asserts, "Christians are to be in the world but not of the world." Two different prepositions are used in this charge — in and of. If you are in something, it refers to your setting — where you are physically located. If you are of something, it means you aren't just near in proximity, but you are an inherent part of it; your very being finds its source in it.

Lysa TerKeurst

When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, 'Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?' He said to him, 'Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.' He said to him, 'Feed my lambs.' - John 21

Have you ever felt God stirring you to do something that's terrifyingly outside of your comfort zone? I confess that left to my own choosing, I want to take the safe, certain and comfortable route. And then Scriptures march right up to my limited perspective and challenge me to walk a path I'd never choose on my own.
