Plan: Return to Refuge

Do You Want the Good News or the Bad News?

Leah DiPascal

Behold, upon the mountains, the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace! Keep your feasts, O Judah; fulfill your vows, for never again shall the worthless pass through you; he is utterly cut off. - Nahum 1

The book of Nahum only has three chapters. But don't let the size fool you into thinking not much is shared in such few pages. Just like the meaning of Nahum's name (comfort), his oracle provided good news for the people of Judah, offering them comfort and hope for their future. On the flip side, Nahum's news about Nineveh's future? Hmmm, not so good. Not good at all.

For the Lᴏʀᴅ is restoring the majesty of Jacob as the majesty of Israel, for plunderers have plundered them and ruined their branches. - Nahum 2

I'm not sure I've ever sat down to read the Bible and thought, "Let me turn to the book of Nahum for some encouragement today."

Death. Destruction. Humiliation. This is what Nahum prophesied against the city of Nineveh in chapter 3. His news is nothing but devastation and ruin.

An Unexpected Answer

Denise J. Hughes

You who are of purer eyes than to see evil and cannot look at wrong, why do you idly look at traitors and remain silent when the wicked swallows up the man more righteous than he? - Habakkuk 1

Why does God remain silent when there's so much suffering in the world?

Krista Williams

I will take my stand at my watchpost and station myself on the tower, and look out to see what he will say to me, and what I will answer concerning my complaint. - Habakkuk 2

"Wait for it … " This catchphrase is often used to create suspense or direct our attention to what's coming up. As we open our Bibles to Habakkuk 2, we find Habakkuk is strategically positioning himself to "wait for it."

God's Perfect Justice

Titania Paige

Be silent before the Lord Gᴏᴅ! For the day of the Lᴏʀᴅ is near; - Zephaniah 1

You turn on your television or scroll through your feed, only to find out that it happened again. Another school shooting. A guilty criminal's charges were dismissed. Another innocent bystander killed. Your first response is anger, but it's soon replaced with something else — a desire to take action, along with grief over the disappointing lack of justice in our world. A grief that chips at our faith and causes us to question if God is good or twisted or apathetic?

Recently, while looking at fixer-upper houses for sale, I happened upon a website for foreclosed homes. One house listed was in our desired neighborhood, so we hopped in the car to drive by and take a look.

Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins? Now, therefore, thus says the Lᴏʀᴅ of hosts: Consider your ways. - Haggai 1

When we bought our farm, there was an old house on the property. It was in need of repairs before we could move in. We were told it would take only four months. Let's just say it did NOT take only four months.

True Glory

Ann Swindell

The latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former, says the LORD of hosts. And in this place I will give peace, declares the Lᴏʀᴅ of hosts. - Haggai 2

God's people felt weak — and afraid. After receiving a prophetic word from Haggai, they repented and obeyed God's command to rebuild the temple that had been in tatters. (Haggai 1:12, 14) But a month after they started rebuilding, some were discouraged. Remembering the glory of the former temple made them despair at ever being able to re-create such a monumental structure. They may have even felt ashamed at letting the temple stand in ruins. Their spirits were dampened and downcast.

I can't do this anymore. Have you ever felt that way? Whether it's motherhood or marriage, a career path or a relationship, when life dashes our expectations and presents an uncertain future, despair can lead us to a place so hopeless we honestly don't believe we can go one step further.

If you've ever been summoned to jury duty, you know the drill. After finding the courthouse and going through security, you check in and then wait to see if you're selected as a juror. If appointed, you hear the testimonies of both the prosecution and the defense while the judge arbitrates the case. The jurors ultimately decide the outcome: guilty or not guilty.

Before Zerubbabel you shall become a plain. And he shall bring forward the top stone amid shouts of "Grace, grace to it!"' - Zechariah 4

There have been more than enough times in my life where I go about purely surviving off of my strength and will, and not my heavenly Father's. Like when I thought that if I read enough parenting books, I would somehow gain more patience and strength for my kids on my own. Every time I choose my way over seeking God's approach, I am reminded that His strength and wisdom are greater than mine.

We all love a promise of blessing and victory. Hopeful promises remind us of new things to come.
