The Cloud of Glory
Day: 9 | Plan: Numbers
Today's Reading: Numbers 9
Numbers 9:23 (NIV) “At the LORD's command they encamped, and at the LORD's command they set out. They obeyed the LORD’s order, in accordance with his command through Moses.”
When the workmen laid the last pieces of the tabernacle in place, the cloud of glory that had previously enveloped Moses on top of Mount Sinai descended upon the Holy of Holies. What a glorious moment that must have been! The glory of God came to dwell among His people. The cloud became a visible symbol of God’s holy presence. Unlike other clouds, it remained in a fixed position, hovering over the tabernacle. By day, a dark cloud and by night, a fiery column. In God’s goodness, it gave shade to protect from the scorching heat and light to guide their way.
The cloud also functioned as a signal to God’s people. It was a command to take action. The rising and falling of the cloud dictated when they were to pick up and move or stop and set up camp. It served as a daily reminder of God’s guiding hand. It also issued a message to the surrounding nations that God’s favor and protection was upon them.
The Israelites never knew when the cloud would move. How hard it must have been day and night watching, never knowing if this would be the day. Yet, they waited and obeyed. And when the time arrived to pack up and go, they forged ahead in the unknown wilderness, with bold confidence trusting God was leading and protecting them.
Life hasn’t changed through the centuries. We too enter into unknown places, waiting and wondering what God is doing. We too must navigate through wilderness times.
The good news for us, my friend, is that what God did for the Israelites, He will do for us. It might not be so obvious to our senses; we may not visually see God. And He doesn’t physically dwell among us. But He has given us something far better, something more precious and glorious. God sent a piece of Himself, His Holy Spirit, to live within us.
When we receive Jesus as our Lord and Savior, the Spirit of the Living God, the power that parted the Red Sea and raised Jesus from the dead, comes to live inside you and me!
By His Spirit, God leads us.
“For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God” (Romans 8:14).
God goes before us.
“The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged" (Deuteronomy 31:8).
God directs our steps.
“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it’” (Isaiah 30:21).
God makes us more than conquerors.
“What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? … No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us” (Romans 8:31, 37).
Let’s celebrate these truths today!
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You that as You led Your people in the wilderness, You will lead me. There is wisdom and protection when I submit my plans to Yours. So I relinquish them to You today. Cause my thoughts and my will to come in alignment with Yours. Go before me and lead the way. Direct my steps. Thank You that in my obedience, I will hear Your voice saying, This is the way, my child, walk in it. In Jesus’ name, amen.
