A Holiday with God

Leah DiPascal

Day: 28 | Plan: Numbers

Today's Reading: Numbers 29

Numbers 29:40 (NIV) “Moses told the Israelites all that the LORD commanded him.”

Experiencing more of God often requires us to step away from the normal so we can fully participate in the exceptional. But that can be hard to do.

Even though nothing can compare to being in God’s presence, we may find ourselves struggling to let go of our daily routines. To do less so we can experience more of Him. To set aside all that’s grabbing our attention so we can completely give our devotion to the Lord.

Numbers 29 describes three special holidays—the Festival of Trumpets, the Day of Atonement and the Festival of Tabernacles. God uniquely created these festivals, placed them on the Israelites’ calendar and commanded the people to observe them.

These holidays provided a time of physical and spiritual refreshment for the people. It also was an opportunity for worship, giving and recommitment to God.

In order for the Israelites to fully participate in each extraordinary event, they had to do three things:

1. Set aside their daily routines and responsibilities for a dedicated period of time.

2. Come together as a group with intentionality to worship and honor God.

3. Offer something of value as a sacrificial gift to the Lord.

I know what you’re thinking. Hmm … sounds like church. Not quite. The Festival of Tabernacle alone lasted for seven days. Take a minute and think about what’s on your calendar for the next seven days.

Would you be able to set it all aside right now for a dedicated time with God? Better yet … would you be willing? Would I be willing?

Not only should we be willing, we should be grateful. Grateful that our Lord and Savior desires to spend time with us, and He is more than willing!

How often do we choose the normal and forfeit the exceptional? And we wonder why we’re so exhausted all the time—feeling spiritually depleted and emotionally dry. Could it be that our sense of loneliness and desire for more community is really a symptom from rushing through our intimate time with the One who matters the most?

Are you feeling tired and far from God? Has your joy been washed away by stress and worry? Try clearing your calendar for a few hours (or a few days) to take a spiritual holiday with the Lord. Separate yourself from the demands of your daily routine and be willing to give Him your very best.

Prayer : Lord, I want to have a special time away with You, but the demands in my life make it seem impossible. Help me to carve out time today to sit in Your presence and be renewed. Show me what I can remove from my schedule or assign to someone else. Teach me how to create a sacred space of worship that honors You. I want to give You my very best, not my leftover time. In Jesus’ name, amen.
