Trading Chaos for God’s Order
Day: 2 | Plan: Numbers
Today's Reading: Numbers 2
Numbers 2:1-2 (NIV) “The LORD said to Moses and Aaron: ‘The Israelites are to camp around the tent of meeting some distance from it, each of them under their standard and holding the banners of their family.’”
In Numbers 1, we see God orchestrating the meticulous count of all able-bodied males over the age of 20 to create a military roster within the Israelite nation. Today, we’ll discover how God strategically placed each tribe in perfect position before they set out towards the land of Canaan. Without God’s order, chaos would be inevitable at camp and on the move.
Positioned on the east side of the tabernacle was the tribe of Judah, with its allied tribes Issachar and Zebulun. They were first in line to march.
Positioned on the south side of the tabernacle was the tribe of Reuben, with its allied tribes Simeon and Gad. They were second in line to march.
Positioned on the west side of the tabernacle was the tribe of Ephraim, with its allied tribes Manasseh and Benjamin. They were third in line to march
Positioned on the north side of the tabernacle was the tribe of Dan, with its allied tribes Asher and Naphtali. They were fourth in line to march.
The Levites who were the only consecrated people were in the middle, closest to the tabernacle, surrounding it on all sides. God made it very clear that the tabernacle would be at the center of His holy formation.
Since the tabernacle symbolized the presence of God with them, it remained a visual reminder that He would always be at the center of every move Israel made—whether they were camped in one place or in triumphal march towards the Promised Land.
We can learn some valuable lessons from today’s reading:
God is a God of order and nothing is accomplished in His kingdom without divine organization. We can be certain that His plans for our lives are not conjured up on a daily basis. He doesn’t wait until the last minute to decide how He will lead us.
Just as God’s presence (symbolized by the tabernacle) was the central focus for the Israelites, creating order and guidance, His presence can do the same for us. When we choose to place God at the center of our lives, He becomes the focal point through which all our thoughts, decisions and directions take shape. As He leads us, we can follow Him with assurance and peace of mind.
And just as God revealed His plans to the Israelites in an orderly fashion, He carefully and methodically orchestrated His plans for our lives. In fact, He chose us and has been planning for us before the creation of this world. (Ephesians 1:4-5)
At times, we may not be able to see it, but God is continuously working behind the scenes in the utmost organized ways, moving us forward towards our own Promised Land.
For you, that may be a restored marriage, being set free from an addiction, being healed of chronic illness or experiencing freedom from negative thinking.
God’s thoughts are higher than our thoughts. His ways are higher than our ways. (Isaiah 55:8-9) He put things in place according to His infinite wisdom, not our limited insight. Even when we don’t understand … even when life seems chaotic, we must trust Him.
The best way we can begin to establish order in our own lives is by seeking out our number one priority, which is to love the Lord our God with all our heart and with all our soul and with all our strength. (Deuteronomy 6:5)
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for demonstrating and teaching me the importance of Your divine order. Despite the chaos in our world, I’m comforted to know that You are still in control. Help me to remember that Your plans for me are perfect and well developed. Although I don’t always understand all the instructions You have given me in Your Word, I trust that they are for my benefit and for Your utmost glory. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Your life doesn’t have to be in perfect order for you to become a Christian. But the... Read More
