My Inheritance and Reward

Day: 18 | Plan: Numbers

Today's Reading: Numbers 18

Numbers 18:20 (NIV) “The LORD said to Aaron, ‘You will have no inheritance in their land, nor will you have any share among them; I am your share and your inheritance among the Israelites.’”

Many rewarding things in life often require the most work: a successful career, a happy marriage, a master’s degree, raising healthy kids. These types of achievements don’t happen on their own. They require people who are dedicated, responsible and willing to take on great tasks for a period of time to benefit the rewards.

In Numbers 18 we read about Aaron and the priests who were responsible for the ministry of the tabernacle. This great assignment required the significant task of handling the sacred instruments and following the appointed rituals.

These priests were given a tremendous responsibility that often required hard work and a heavy burden. So God appointed the Levites as assistants to help the priests, and their services included everything except handling the tabernacle furnishings. Surely these job assignments would come with plenty of benefits?

Now the land of Canaan was part of the inheritance God had promised through Abraham, and the Israelites had waited so long to receive. But the Lord determined that the priests and Levites would not receive a piece of land as their inheritance, even though the other tribes would. (Deuteronomy 18:1-2)

Sound unfair? On the surface it does, but it was just the opposite. Instead, they would receive something better. A greater reward. God chose His own portion to be their inheritance. Here’s how it worked:

As the Israelites presented their daily tithes and offerings to God at the tabernacle, He in turn gave it to the Levites. These portions not only served as a source of food and provision for the Levites, but also compensation for their work at the tabernacle. Out of all the tribes, God specifically chose the Levites to care for the place where His presence dwelled. Their inheritance was significantly different than all the other tribes.

Did you know that God also promises us an inheritance? Colossians 3:23-24 tells us, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

Through Christ we receive our inheritance as a reward from God. It is the sum total of all He has promised us in salvation. It will never decay, spoil or lose its value like other earthy possessions, because our inheritance is being securely kept in heaven. (1 Peter 1:4)

Your heavenly heritage includes every spiritual blessing and is part of God’s purpose and will for your life. (Ephesians 1:3-5) So on days when you feel depleted, empty-handed, overworked, underappreciated and lacking earthly rewards remember that God is holding a beautiful inheritance for you in heaven. Others may not see what you’re doing, but God does and He earnestly rewards those who continue seeking after Him.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, You are my greatest reward. Thank You for giving me a beautiful inheritance You’ve secured for me through Christ and safely hold for me in heaven. Help me to remember this on days when the world tries to tell me all the things I’m lacking. Help me to keep my eyes on You and celebrate today the heavenly rewards I will receive from You in the future. In Jesus’ name, amen.
