Time to Get Organized
Day: 1 | Plan: Numbers
Today's Reading: Numbers 1
Numbers 1:45 (NIV) “All the Israelites twenty years old or more who were able to serve in Israel’s army were counted according to their families.”
When God has a big assignment, He always starts working in advance to put details into place so He can move His people forward in faith.
A little over a year has passed since the Israelites left Egypt, where they had been enslaved for 400 years. They have been camping at Mt. Sinai while God has been steadily preparing them to march into Canaan to take possession of the land.
When they first left Egypt, they were a disorganized mass of former slaves. But now, they have Moses as their capable leader, the Ten Commandments and God’s law to govern their behavior, Aaron and priests to lead worship, and the presence of God dwelling among them to instruct, protect and guide them.
Just a few more details and they would soon begin their march into the land God had promised them. But first, God instructs Moses and Aaron to take a military census of every male in Israel who is 20 years old or older and can serve in the army.
What an overwhelming job! Can you imagine the two of them trying to take a national census without an adding machine or computer? Or without any help?
God knew this task was too huge for Moses and Aaron to do alone, so He appointed a man from each tribe to help them count. (Numbers 1:4-5) Each leader was responsible for counting the men in his family, listing each one by name and then reporting back to Moses.
As God’s people, He has designed us to work together and help each other. And He instructs us in His Word to do everything in a fitting and orderly way. When we are faced with a task too great for us to do on our own, it is made easier, and we are more effective when we support and cooperate with each other. The larger the task, the more it will require structural organization and the delegation of responsibilities.
Because they followed God’s instructions and worked together in an orderly way, the census was complete, and the number of fighting men was reported and recorded.
God is a master of organization. Just as He determines the number of stars in the sky and calls each one into place, He leaves nothing unarranged.
And just as He gets the children of Israel organized to move forward in faith, He wants to bring order and peace to our lives and move us forward in faith.
Prayer: Lord God, You are a God of order. I humbly ask that You would help me order my heart, my home and every task You have given me to do, so You receive the most glory. Make my life count for You. Help me graciously receive the help and instruction You send my way. Also, grant me a spirit of cooperation and use me to help others fulfill their God-given purposes. In Jesus’ name, amen.
