Go and Tell Your Story
Day: 40 | Plan: Matthew
Today's Reading: Matthew 28:16-20
Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV) "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Matthew opened his gospel establishing Jesus as the Messiah, who came from the line of Abraham. And he now closes his gospel with Jesus' last words. Let’s lean in close to hear what was on our Savior’s heart.
Jesus final words are what we call “The Great Commission.” He commanded His disciples to go and tell their story about Jesus. It’s a call Jesus extended not only to His disciples, but to all believers. And included in those believers, my friend, would be you and me! It’s a call to tell our story about Jesus.
To authenticate this commissioning, Jesus announced that God had given Him all authority in the heavens and on the earth. It’s authority He had been exercising throughout His ministry.
Jesus then issued three specific instructions.
Work He had already been doing. But until now, Jesus had limited that ministry to the Jews. But now He gave a new commission—a worldwide mission to share the Good News He had given to them. To believe in His name. To love Him with all their hearts. To walk in obedience to His commands.
Jesus closed His commissioning with a promise. That as they went out, His Presence would be with them always and forever. He made good on His promise 50 days later when tongues of fire fell from heaven, resting on each of His disciples, filling them with His Spirit, empowering them for their commission (Acts 2:1-4).
And this filling continues even today. When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, He seals us with His Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13). Don’t miss this! The Spirit of the Living God comes to live inside you and me so that we can go to wherever God takes us to share our story … how Jesus has loved us and how He wants to love them in the very same way!
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for not only inviting me to share the hope I have in You but also empowering me to do so through the power of Your Holy Spirit. I invite You to open a door today for me to share the hope I have with someone today. In Jesus' name, amen.
