Entrusted to Love

Leah DiPascal

To Timothy my true son in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. - 1 Timothy 1

Imagine if you were preparing to retire from a long, successful career. Who would you choose to carry on what you had started years ago? Who would faithfully follow your instructions? Who would have the potential and integrity to be trusted with what you had established?

A Peaceful, Quiet Life

Whitney Capps

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. - 1 Timothy 2

Do we live in a time with more conflict than ever before? Probably not. We are not engaged in a world war or draft-driven military conflict. Though we hardly have worldwide peace, most of us are not facing daily boycotts, battles, marches or violence like those of previous generations.

Organizing the Church

Wendy Pope

Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task. - 1 Timothy 3

Organizations function at a maximum level of excellence when leadership qualifications are defined and observed. It’s imperative to have a successful leadership structure in place, so when trouble rises there are rules and leaders ready to resolve the issue. The church is no different.

Godliness Training

Camilla Griffith

Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. - 1 Timothy 4

First Timothy 4 abounds with action-oriented words and ideas. Paul talks about training (1 Timothy 4:7, 1 Timothy 4:8), labor, striving (1 Timothy 4:10), setting an example (1 Timothy 4:12), devotion (1 Timothy 4:13), diligence, giving your whole self (1 Timothy 4:15) and perseverance. (1 Timothy 4:16)

Shepherding God's Flock

Wendy Blight

Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity. Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need. - 1 Timothy 5

The church is an imperfect family that influences how the world views God and His people. Right or wrong, unbelievers judge the church and God’s people by the way we live, the words we speak and how we treat one another.

Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge. - 1 Timothy 6

Have you ever stepped into a role and had no idea what you were doing and then someone gave you some unsolicited advice? If so, did it make you question whether you were capable of doing the role or were you grateful for the input?

If we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself. - 2 Timothy 2

Letters are personal communication between two people. It’s an art that is somewhat lost today because an email isn’t quite the same. As we are read Timothy’s letter a little each day, it may be helpful to remind ourselves of the connectedness and progression in Paul’s message to Timothy.

The Holiness of Self-Control

Camilla Griffith

For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age. - Titus 2

Every time I read through the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5, I get tripped up by one that feels a little out of place: self-control. Maybe it’s the “self” part of it – how do you expect me to control myself?

The Journey of Faith

Denise J. Hughes

Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. - James 1

One time I took my college-age daughter on a road trip. When I pulled out my atlas — you know, the kind on paper — she smiled and shook her head. Then she swiped her phone to open an app for maps. Since we had the same destination, we plotted the best route together.

On a scale from 1-10, where do you suppose you rank in living out your faith? Do only your close friends and family members know you are a believer? Or are you giving clues to everyone you encounter that Jesus is alive and Lord over your life? Friend, these are important questions I need to be reminded of every day. Maybe you do too.

Words Matter

Denise J. Hughes

Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness. - James 3

We reap what we sow. It’s a simple cause-effect relationship. If we sow kindness, we’ll reap kindness. If we sow malice, we’ll reap malice. This is true not only in what we do, but also in what we say. Our words matter.

The book of James is often compared to the book of Proverbs, for it’s a collection of some pretty straightforward advice. It’s also fair to say this book resembles a symphony. It begins with an overture in James 1, explaining how the journey of faith will include trials.

Walking Step by Step in the Light

Wendy Blight

This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. - 1 John 1

Today John talks about what it looks like to walk in the light. As we begin, consider these truths about light. It dispels darkness. It sustains life. It brings clarity.

"Confident and unashamed." Isn't that a lovely description? Oh friend, when I see Jesus, that's exactly how I'd like to be. Confident and unashamed. Though greeting Jesus feels far away most days, I still wonder if I'll be ready. How does one become confident and unashamed?
