Living It Out Loud

Wendy Pope

Day: 40 | Plan: Leviticus-Hebrews

Today's Reading: Hebrews 13

Hebrews 13:9 (NIV) “Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings. It is good for our hearts to be strengthened by grace, not by eating ceremonial foods, which is of no benefit to those who do so.”

If we didn’t know better when reading today’s key verse, it would be easy to assume the words were quoted from a present-day sermon or pulled from the writings of a twenty-first-century Christian author. The staunch warning written to Hebrew Christians can undoubtedly be applied to our lives as well.

The Hebrews were facing all manner of judgment for converting to Christianity and being tempted to revert back to Judaism. Hebrews 13 is the writer’s last-ditch effort to convince them to stay the course of their faith. A paraphrase of our verse might be, “Don’t go back.”

Oh friend, when life gets hard, it’s so easy to turn back to our lives before Christ or at the very least stop pursuing Him with intensity. The people at work don’t understand your commitment to church on Sunday and midweek Bible study. Maybe your husband isn’t a believer and challenges your prayer time and Bible reading. Those in your carpool question why you now listen to only Christian music. Persecution weakens our resolve but dedication regenerates our devotion.

We can also be wooed and wowed by other teachings, strange teachings that seem to require less and have fewer “rules.” Can I say to you “don’t turn back”? Live your faith loud and proud. Be the fragrance of Christ’s grace and mercy at all times in all places. The teller at your bank, the cashier at your grocery, and the clerk at your dry cleaners need Jesus. For their sakes, don’t turn back.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, help me to stand strong against the pull of the world’s definition of faith. I don’t want to fall for strange teachings. My heart’s desire is to live my faith out loud for everyone to know how awesome You are. In Jesus’ name, amen.
