The Rhythm of Rest

Lysa TerKeurst

Day: 35 | Plan: Leviticus-Hebrews

Today's Reading: Leviticus 25

Leviticus 25:3-4a (NIV) “For six years sow your fields, and for six years prune your vineyards and gather their crops. But in the seventh year the land is to have a year of sabbath rest, a sabbath to the LORD.”

God is serious about rest. He wants us to weave the rhythm of rest into our lives. He modeled this when He created the world in six days and rested on the seventh. He commanded it for His people in Exodus 20:8-10, “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work …”

Now in these verses from Leviticus 25, God is giving His people a picture of the benefits of Sabbath using the land as the illustration. The land is to be worked for six years but then the seventh year it is to rest completely.

Can you imagine how scary this must have seemed to the people when they first heard this? They depended on the land for their food. So, how would they eat during that seventh year? These are logical questions to which God gives a supernatural answer: He will provide.

And the same is true for us during our Sabbath day as well. If you find it hard to take a day off of work, I understand. But try it. Let God give you His supernatural provision as you honor His vision for your rest.

Look at all the supernatural ways God promised to provide as the people gave the land a year of rest:

  • Leviticus 25:18 promises safety in the land.
  • Leviticus 25:19 promises the people will eat your fill and promises safety again.
  • Leviticus 25:21 promises that the sixth year will yield not just enough for the year of rest but enough provision for three years!

Did you catch that? When we honor God with our Sabbath rest, He sees us as people who can handle being blessed!

But if we refuse the resting, He must withhold this kind of blessing.

God loves His people so much, He wants them to understand the all-important rhythm of resting. He modeled it. He commanded it. He illustrated how He will provide through it. And most of all, He blesses it.

What day will be set apart as your holy Sabbath day this week?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I admit that I often struggle to rest. I fill my days and weeks with activities and forget that in order to reap all Your benefits, I need to do as You have commanded and make Sabbath a priority. Help me to see the joy of setting time apart for a Sabbath day. I long to honor You with my rest. In Jesus’ name, amen.
