A Pure Pursuit

Day: 28 | Plan: Leviticus-Hebrews

Today's Reading: Leviticus 18

Leviticus 18:24,29 (NIV)“Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways, because this is how the nations that I am going to drive out before you became defiled … Everyone who does any of these detestable things—such persons must be cut off from their people.”

How can a broken world be drawn to a holy God when His children continuously behave badly?

As believers, one of the things that should differentiate us from the world is our behavior … if we’re behaving according to God’s guidelines.

In Leviticus 18, God was crystal clear when He gave the Israelites instructions on sexual impurity: “Do not define yourselves in any of these ways …” But what were some of “these ways”?

God was talking about immoral behaviors and sexually impure relationships. Lifestyle choices made by the Egyptians and the Canaanites, which had negatively influenced the Israelites.

God was basically saying to them, don’t imitate the corrupt people from your past (Egyptians) or mimic certain immoral people you will engage in the future (Canaanites). (Leviticus 18:3) I have made you a holy nation—now act like one. If you don’t, there will be consequences. (Leviticus 18:28-29)

God had already established a perfect design of sexual purity at the time of creation (Genesis 1:27-28a), but His divine plan was impacted by the Fall. When sin entered our world everything became flawed, including our relationships with others.

The detailed list of these things contains God’s examples of flawed relationships and sexuality gone awry because of sin. This list includes polygamy, fornication, forced sex, relative sex, incest, homosexuality, adultery, beastiality and promiscuity to name a few.

Today we see this same list played out in living color on our television screens, flooding the Internet, creatively crafted into music lyrics, openly discussed in school classrooms and passionately disputed in our judicial system.

Many people, yes, even Christians, are divided in their opinions about these things. But do you know what truth is? It’s not our opinion. It’s not their opinion. Truth is God’s opinion … about everything. EVERYTHING.

God’s opinion stands firm and is unchangeable. Every perfect word breathed from His mouth and inscribed on the pages of Holy Scripture is truth. (2 Timothy 3:16-17) And no self-rationalizing or self-gratifying by any of us will ever change it.

When we’re wooed by sin, giving our hearts over to sexual impurity, we exchange God’s rich truth for a cheap tainted lie from the enemy. (Romans 1:24-25)

Let’s remember … when it comes to relationships and sexual purity, our pursuit should always be in line with the unchangeable truth of God’s Word.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, You are good and Your choices for me are always wrapped in pure love. Guard my heart and mind every day to protect me from sexual impurity. Come to my aid when I’m tempted by the enemy. Help me to always run away from sexual sin and run towards You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
