A Place to Run
Day: 20 | Plan: Joshua-Judges
Today’s Reading: Joshua 20
Joshua 20:1-2 (NIV) “Then the LORD said to Joshua: ‘Tell the Israelites to designate the cities of refuge, as I instructed you through Moses.’”
Where do you run for safety and refuge? Home is my place of refuge. Whether it’s where I live now with my husband and children, or the home I grew up in, home is my safe place.
The first thing on Joshua’s agenda after assigning land allotments was to establish cities of refuge. Joshua designated Kedesh, Shechem, Hebron, Bezer, Ramoth and Golan as places of safety for individuals who unintentionally took the life of another person. God mandated the cities of refuge; however, the mandate did not excuse first-degree murder. Those who took a life accidently would have safe boundaries for asylum until the case was investigated.
In a similar way, Jesus is our place of refuge. When we sin, we can run to the safe boundaries of God’s unconditional love. We won’t be rejected and there’s no need to fear. The Holy Spirit investigates our heart and reveals our sin. God’s doesn’t condemn, He forgives. Through Christ, we have a personal relationship with God and always have a safe place to go when we sin.
Joshua made certain the people knew the location of every city of refuge, so they would know exactly where to go in times of trouble. Oh friend, have you run to Jesus? Can you call Him your safe place? There’s no better time than now. No better day than today. Experience the freedom and retreat of being at home with Jesus.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for coming to die so I could live, eternally and free. Forgive me for seeking refuge in places that aren’t safe and don’t have my good in mind. Today, right now, I run to You ready to receive Your acceptance and love. In Jesus’ name, amen.
I love that God provided multiple places of safety. He strategically selected safe places in... Read More
