Day: 15 | Plan: Joshua-Judges
Today’s Reading: Joshua 15
Joshua 15:63 (NIV) “Judah could not dislodge the Jebusites, who were living in Jerusalem; to this day the Jebusites live there with the people of Judah.”
Soon my parents will celebrate 64 years of marriage. My mother’s rings have always caught my eye. They aren’t fancy, just a simple set of white gold rings with a timeless design. When I was younger I loved to try them on. My mom would say, “One day you will inherit my rings.” As a little girl, it was hard to imagine when “one day” might come.
For the Israelites, specifically the tribe of Judah, “one day” has arrived. Finally, this “inheritance” they had heard about and dreamed of from one generation to the next was finally coming to fruition. Abraham’s descendants would at last make a great nation. (Exodus 6:8) Can you even imagine their anticipation? With God on their side they were ready to dispossess the land from the habitants. The covenant was made. The time had arrived, but Scripture tells us “Judah could not dislodge the Jebusites.” (Joshua 15:63a) Why?
The consensus of many commentaries as to the why is simple unbelief. It would be easy for them to doubt their victory as they surveyed the Jebusites living in Jerusalem. Though intimidating, it shouldn’t have mattered what they saw; it only mattered Who they believed.
Often I wrestle with unbelief. The enemy stands at the gate of my inheritance of peace, joy and the abundant life Jesus died to give me. And yet I have surrendered this real estate to the Jebusites of this world: doubt and fear.
Have you given up and given in to the Jebusites? Friends, if God says it, we can believe it! Grab your bullhorn, proclaim these promises and reclaim your real estate.
- Jesus came to give us peace. (John 14:27)
- Nothing can separate us from the love of Christ. (Romans 8:37-39)
- Jesus came to give us a full life. (John 10:10)
- God will never leave or forsake us. (Hebrews 13:5)
- Jesus died for every person who will believe. (John 3:16)
- He is faithful and just to forgive all our sins. (1 John 1:9)
Prayer: God, Jehovah-Nissi, my banner. I carry You confidently today as I take back real estate that belongs to me. You’ve promised me so much. Forgive me for losing sight of the power I have to take down my “Jebusites.” I believe. Lord, help my unbelief. In Jesus’ name, amen.
