A Magnificent Model of Faith

Day: 14 | Plan: Joshua-Judges

Today’s Reading: Joshua 14

Joshua 14:8 (NIV) But my fellow Israelites who went up with me made the hearts of the people melt in fear. I, however, followed the LORD my God wholeheartedly.

Old age is often a season of slowing down. It’s the time of life when most of us would seek retirement … or comfort … or ease. But not Caleb. He was a magnificent old man. A man who didn’t allow his age or circumstances to alter his commitment to God.

We first meet Caleb as a younger man in Numbers 13. He was 40 when Moses sent him into the Promised Land as one of the original 12 spies to gather intelligence. When the majority doubted God, Caleb was willing to stand with Joshua in faith. Caleb was not a crowd-pleaser. Instead, he was a God-pleaser. He believed and trusted the promises of God when others did not. (Numbers 13:30)

At the older age of 85, Caleb is still proving to be steady and strong. (Joshua 14:10-11) He still believes. His hair may have faded over time, but his faith has not. He is still clinging to the promises of God and desires to do God’s will.

When Joshua is dividing the land, Caleb confidently asks for the hill country of Hebron. God promised this land to him forty-five years earlier when he first demonstrated his faith. (Numbers 14:24; Joshua 14:9) Now, despite his age, Caleb is not deterred by the difficulty of claiming his inheritance. He is still ready to face new challenges and seek new opportunities to live out his faith. He knows the cities are fortified, and the descendants of Anak are massive and mighty. (Joshua 14:15; Numbers 13:28, 33) Yet he is not afraid to take on this tough assignment. After all these years, Caleb still trusts that God will help him conquer the land and he is more than willing and ready to obey. (Joshua 14:12)

It’s remarkable that the disappointments of the past did not leave Caleb disillusioned about the future. He has patiently wandered in the wilderness for 40 years as a result of the unbelief of others, waiting for God to fulfill His Word. And throughout the course of time, there is no hint of bitterness to hinder his faith. His vision of all that God can and will do has not wilted with age.

Caleb is not naive or impetuous. His boldness is anchored in the greatness of God. (Joshua 14:12) Caleb is a wise and patient man. Constant in his faith, he once again displays courage, confidence and an unwavering commitment to God.

Like Caleb, our age should not diminish our dedication or enthusiasm to serve God. As long as God gives us life, we should use our physical and mental abilities to glorify Him.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for Caleb’s example of faith. It is both convicting and challenging. I don’t want my age or my circumstances to diminish my devotion to You. I want to respond rightly to every challenge no matter my age. I pray that like Caleb, my faith and my strength will equal each and every day You bless me with. My heart’s desire is to follow You faithfully all the days of my life. Lord, I confess I need Your help. Make me strong and steady for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, amen.
