Who Do You Love More?

Day: 25 | Plan: John

Today's Reading: John 21

John 21:15 (NIV) “ … Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?’”

Peter was an enthusiastic disciple who loved Jesus and followed Him with great loyalty. But when Jesus was arrested and the problems became a matter of life and death, Peter denied being one of His followers.

Peter turned away from Jesus because he feared the cost of following Him. He took His focus off of what Jesus had promised. Problems beg us to forget God’s promises.

Though Peter walked away, Jesus did not. Resurrected Jesus appeared in the flesh and could not have made it any clearer what He wanted Peter to ponder. With one question, He ruined Peter’s justifications to go back to his comfort zone of being a fisherman.

“ … Jesus said to Simon Peter, ‘Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?’” (John 21:15)

I think there was a lot for Peter to consider in this one question, “Do you love me more than these?”

Do you love me enough to risk walking away from your comfort zone?

Do you love me more than the money you can make fishing?

Do you love me enough to lay down your plans for all I’ve got in store for you?

We’ve all got our own “these.” They are anything that make us look away from the less chosen path of following God with everything we’ve got. Is there something that’s pulling your heart, your mind, your focus away from Jesus?

Picture Him with great compassion and tenderness asking you this very same thing, “Do you love me more than these?” Peter‘s answer to love Christ the most changed the world with the Gospel. What might God do with your fully committed life?

Prayer: Father, I confess that at times I have loved other things more than You. I have stayed in my comfort zone. I have chosen my plans over Yours. Forgive me for the times that I have put other things before You, and remind me that nothing compares to loving You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
