A Crimson Stain
Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool. - Isaiah 1
I once dropped a permanent marker on my favorite shirt. The ink quickly soaked through the material, leaving a bright blue stain.
The Lord Alone Will Be Exalted
The haughty looks of man shall be brought low, and the lofty pride of men shall be humbled, and the Lᴏʀᴅ alone will be exalted in that day. - Isaiah 2
Ever since the tower of Babel, people have been striving to be the best.
Between the Now and the Not Yet

In that day the branch of the Lord shall be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land shall be the pride and honor of the survivors of Israel. - Isaiah 3-4
As a child, I wrestled with two competing images of God.
What a Good, Good Father We Have
Melanie Davis Porter
Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! - Isaiah 5
We live in a permissive society that seems to continually change its morals to fit its behaviors.
Chosen to Go
And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, 'Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?' Then I said, 'Here I am! Send me. - Isaiah 6
As a child, I loved going outside to play at school.
Faith Postures In Scary Moments
And say to him, 'Be careful, be quiet, do not fear, and do not let your heart be faint because of these two smoldering stumps of firebrands, at the fierce anger of Rezin and Syria and the son of Remaliah. - Isaiah 7
Some of my scary moments in life have included health problems, betrayal in relationships and financial strains. Sometimes a smaller issue has kept me up at night as I mentally chewed on concerns over a wrecked car, a sad child or an upsetting post on social media.
When the Waters Rise
But the LORD of hosts, him you shall honor as holy. Let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. - Isaiah 8
Even if we never experience a literal flood in our neighborhoods, all of us live within a cone of uncertainty. Daily, we see the destructive vortex created by sin and sorrow, and we begin to fear a tsunami of problems will rush into our safe havens and wipe out everything we hold dear.
Waiting on God’s Promises
Betsy de Cruz
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. - Isaiah 9:1-7
During the first months of dating my husband, I had an intuition God had chosen him for me. Each day I grew more certain I'd heard God speak. What I didn't expect was that we'd break our engagement the day I bought my wedding dress!
A Call to Take Sin Seriously
…For all this his anger has not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still. - Isaiah 9:8-21
My daughter was 2 years old when she climbed onto our coffee table and positioned herself on her hands and knees. She knew better. We'd taught our kids that climbing on that table was a no-go, so I told her to get down. She fixed her eyes on me and said, "No."

When I ponder the attributes of God, I conjure up an image of a gentle, fatherly figure. Words that come to mind are compassionate, loving, sovereign, trustworthy, patient, kind, merciful, creative, powerful and just.
From Stump to Tree
Kellye Schiffner Carver
There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit. - Isaiah 11
I love a good Cinderella story. A tale of a humble hero or heroine who triumphs over an evil villain. Isaiah 10 highlighted grand forests with boughs lopped off and thickets razed. (Isaiah 10:18-19, 33-34) Perhaps as a continuation, Isaiah 11 introduces a lone stump.
Praise for the Present and Future
Give thanks to the Lord, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the peoples, proclaim that his name is exalted. - Isaiah 12
Public thanks to the Lord is a wonderful pattern for believers to follow today. In Isaiah 11, a song of thanksgiving and praise is expressed for God's restoration and salvation.
