A Review Is Always Helpful

Day: 5 | Plan: Deuteronomy

Today's Reading: Deuteronomy 5

Deuteronomy 5:1 (NIV) “Moses summoned all Israel and said: ‘Hear, Israel, the decrees and laws I declare in your hearing today. Learn them and be sure to follow them.’”

A quick glance of Deuteronomy 5 might cause one to wonder, Ten Commandments? Haven’t we covered that part of the story? Does God need to make an addendum? We need to set the scene by looking back at a couple of events before we discuss the review lesson of the Ten Commandments.

The Israelites, ready to enter the Promised Land, sent spies to scout out the land. When the spies returned with a negative report and failed to trust God for a victorious journey, a punishment was imposed. No one, except Caleb (and we later learn Joshua), would enter the Promised Land. (Deuteronomy 1:35-36)

God has still covenanted with Israel concerning the Ten Commandments. However, the older generation is gone and the new generation needs to be reminded. Moses steps up to the lectern and begins the review, which is always helpful.

The expectation for this new generation was the same as the former generation. God expected His people to obey the commandments. The decrees were given not to restrict but to raise them up to be a holy people, set apart from every other nation.

When was the last time you gave yourself a good review of the Ten Commandments? Personally speaking, it has been too long. Have we forgotten their purpose in our life? Like the nation of Israel, God wants us to be a holy people, set apart from all others. Let’s challenge ourselves to take a few minutes to read Deuteronomy 5:6-21 and rediscover these timeless truths.

Prayer: Lord, Your truths are timeless from age to age. I’m so very thankful that I have the full canon of Scripture to lead and guide me. Thank You for the leadership of the Holy Spirit who helps me understand and apply Your Word to my life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
