Our Now and When God

Today's Reading: Deuteronomy 30
Deuteronomy 30:2 (NIV) “And when you and your children return to the LORD your God and obey him with all your heart and with all your soul according to everything I command you today”
Have you ever hoped for something to happen? Maybe it was getting a call for a job, or a proposal from the love of your life. You just know things will be good when that happens.
“When” is a simple and seemingly inconsequential word but it can turn hopeless into hope. “When” holds the promise, and we find this hope in our key verse today.
Oh, how it must have broken God’s heart to forecast curses on His children, especially for future generations. He knew His children would turn their hearts to other gods despite all He had done and would do for them. But He also knew one day a generation would return to Him. Our God knows our now and knows our whens.
We can identify with the runaway described in Deuteronomy 30. Our world offers luring “gods.” Possessions, position and prestige are as seductive in nature as the “other gods” the people of Israel would face in the Promised Land.
God knows. He knows the temptations we face, and He knows when we will slip because He knows our every step. (Job 34:21) His grace is there, waiting to bring us back to Him when we are aware of our sin and ready to return fully to Him.
God loved Israel. God loves you and me. He is ready with open arms full of grace to restore us and realign our heart with His. A returned heart lovingly submits to the Father. The returned heart is filled with peace and longs to stay aligned with God’s will. Is today your when?
Prayer: Thank You, God, for Your everlasting, never-ending, always-ready grace. I most assuredly don’t deserve it but I’m eternally grateful that it is mine. Forgive me for allowing my heart to run away and bid honor to the seducing powers of other gods. In Jesus’ name, amen.
