Life Is Not a Coin Toss

Krista Williams

Day: 27 | Plan: Deuteronomy

Today's Reading: Deuteronomy 27

Deuteronomy 27:10 (NIV) Obey the LORD your God and follow his commands and decrees that I give you today.”

Have you ever tossed a coin into the air and said, “heads I win, tails you lose”? As children, we play games based completely on chance. However, life is not a matter of chance; it’s a matter of choice. And in Deuteronomy 27, Moses communicates the sobering reality of the choices before Israel.

As Israel prepares to cross the Jordan the choice is before them: to continue to follow God or go their own way. To obey Him or disobey Him, the choice is theirs. Their choices determine whether they will stay in the land and prosper or be driven off.

Rather than success being random, God gave Israel the choice to be the head or the tail. They could be a leading nation, or they could be at the mercy of others. (Deuteronomy 28:13)

Life is a constant stream of opportunities and choices. We have to choose to stand on God’s promises and commands or choose to follow the idols of self and this world.

It can be easy to read this chapter and feel like it’s an ominous ultimatum. Even though God is completely within His rights to give the people ultimatums, He kindly presents the options of the blessings of obedience and the consequences of disobedience, allowing them to choose.

What a grace! God wants them to see what they will be spared, and what will be avoided if they follow His Word.

It’s hard to obey when we don’t know what to do. But when we do know what to do, there is no valid excuse for our disobedience. Moses speaks clearly and repeatedly for all of Israel to understand.

Israel had to acknowledge the potential of their choices to be either a blessing or curse. By their collective “Amen!” they are saying to God: We understand, and we accept the responsibility of each choice.

They acknowledged that if they disobeyed or dishonored God, they would incur His discipline. But if Israel obeyed God, they would receive His best.

Do you know what God expects from you? He is gracious and does not want us to be unaware or make unwise choices. He loves us. So over and over in His Word, He presents His expectations so we can all make wise choices. Every person will be held accountable for his or her response to Him.

Ultimately, we are offering up our “Amen!” by the choices we make. Every choice, every day, is evidence of our commitment to God and His Word.

Prayer: Lord God, You are gracious, loving and kind. Thank You for Your Word and the instruction we receive from it. Help me to apply Your wisdom to my life. I want to be spared the painful discipline that follows disobedience. Holy Spirit, I need Your help and quickening as I navigate through the choices that will present themselves today. Help me pause and remember there is potential and possibility in each and every choice I make. May I use each one to bring glory and honor to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
