Action Steps to an Active Faith

Wendy Pope

Day: 10 | Plan: Deuteronomy

Today's Reading: Deuteronomy 10

Deuteronomy 10:12 (NIV) “And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.”

Inside the walls of our church it is easy to have faith and show our love for God. There is a problem with inside church faith: we have to eventually walk out of church into our community. The Israelites are bound for their new community. Armed with a new set of Ten Commandment tablets, Moses calls them to active faith.

Today’s key verse is overflowing with words of action. There’s no doubt God is expecting a lot from this new generation in their new home. Up till now, Moses has spent time going over their history, land divisions and the Ten Commandments. The previous generation were complainers and whiners. God wants this generation to truly live up to the high calling of being His chosen ones. It’s an active faith of fear, obedience, love and service that causes the heart of one who believes to grow in their faith.

We often read the Old Testament and assume because it was written before Jesus’ death, the teachings don’t apply to our lives. As New Testament believers we have the same high calling of being God’s children. “He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time” (2 Timothy 1:9). Let’s celebrate our faith with other believers inside the church and challenge ourselves to actively live our faith outside the church. What does this look like? Walking in fear of the Lord, obeying His Word and loving and serving others are all signs that we are acting out our faith.

Prayer: Lord, I’m still not as confident in my faith outside the walls of my church as I desire to be. I pray I will have the courage to take action steps to an active faith of reverent fear, obedience, love and service in my community. Use my life to draw others to Jesus. In Jesus’ name, amen.
