How Far Can Your Obedience Reach?

Katy McCown

… remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. - 1 Thessalonians 1

Again? After announcing his desire to learn something new, my son had practiced for a few hours to develop his skill. The next day after school, when we encouraged him to practice again, our boy couldn't believe it. Already he began to grow weary of the work.

Confusing the Command to Love with the Disease to Please

Lysa TerKeurst

… but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please man, but to please God who tests our hearts. - 1 Thessalonians 2

Sometimes I confuse the command to love with the disease to please. Wanting to please other people and not disappoint them seems to be part of my peacemaking make-up. It's something I can catch myself being resigned to having to deal with rather than being determined to overcome.

Show Them Love

Titania Paige

… and may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, as we do for you. - 1 Thessalonians 3

Recently my family and I had the opportunity to serve alongside missionaries in Osaka, Japan. Having previously served as a missionary in Japan for two years, I was eager to go back and demonstrate my love for Japanese believers in any way I could.

Refuse to Compromise

Kellye Schiffner Carver

For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor. - 1 Thessalonians 4:1-12

Let's talk about sex. Are you squirming? Hiding? Tempted to skip today's reading? If so, you'll appreciate Paul's approach.

Waking Up

Melissa Spoelstra

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. - 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

Recently, I woke up in the middle of the night. I tossed and turned and longed to get back to sleep. I wasn't particularly worried about anything or overwhelmed with stress.

Denise J. Hughes

Healthy Christian Community

Karen McNary

... Be at peace among yourselves - 1 Thessalonians 5:12-28

Once we accept the grace and forgiveness found in Jesus, we become a part of the Ecclesia, a Greek word used in the New Testament to describe the Body of Christ or the Church.

Under Pressure

Lyli Dunbar

Therefore we ourselves boast about you in the churches of God for your steadfastness and faith in all your persecutions and in the afflictions that you are enduring. - 2 Thessalonians 1

My Cuban mama's favorite appliance is the pressure cooker. I grew up watching the apparatus hiss on our kitchen stove as boiling water tenderized large cuts of tough meat.

Keep Up the Good Word

Micah Maddox

… comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word. - 2 Thessalonians 2

There was a rumor circulating in the Thessalonian church. It wasn't a small rumor or an assumption of an event that might happen in the town next door. Like a round of the Telephone Game that goes extremely wrong, someone misunderstood the truth and was spreading a word about the coming of Christ that didn't line up with Paul's teaching.

Tough Love

Kelley Brown

As for you, brothers, do not grow weary in doing good. - 2 Thessalonians 3

If given news that I had just a few days left on this earth, I imagine I would stay home from work and abandon the laundry piles and house cleaning. I'd spend my remaining time relaxing and making memories with family and friends.

The Story Ends in Glory

Marissa Henley

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead... - 1 Peter 1:1-12

I hate suspense. When I face uncertainty, stress, suffering or heartache, I long for a sneak peek at the end of the story.

Pursuing Pretty

Melissa Spoelstra

Do not let your adorning be external-the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear-but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious. - 1 Peter 3:1-7

My husband told me he didn't know what I was up to, but he wanted the old Melissa back. This was during our first year of marriage when I had decided to try to be godlier by being quiet like I thought this passage described.

What is God’s Will for My Life?

Sarah E. Frazer

…so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God … in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. - 1 Peter 4:1-11

My husband and I are moving to Honduras. This is God's will for our lives. How do we know? No bright lights from heaven shone down and revealed the path for us. Instead, we learned the value of taking just the next step of obedience.

But rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. - 1 Peter 4:12-19

Shrouded by the cover of darkness, Peter crouched by the crackling fire. Only moments earlier, he swore his uncompromising devotion to Jesus. Yet, in the blur of Jesus' arrest, Peter ran, terrified at the prospect of suffering for the name of Christ.
