Time to Get Organized

Krista Williams

All the Israelites twenty years old or more who were able to serve in Israel’s army were counted according to their families - Numbers 1

When God has a big assignment, He always starts working in advance to put details into place so He can move His people forward in faith. A little over a year has passed since the Israelites left Egypt, where they had been enslaved for 400 years.

Trading Chaos for God’s Order

Leah DiPascal

The LORD said to Moses and Aaron: ‘The Israelites are to camp around the tent of meeting some distance from it, each of them under their standard and holding the banners of their family - Numbers 2

In Numbers 1, we see God orchestrating the meticulous count of all able-bodied males over the age of 20 to create a military roster within the Israelite nation. Today, we’ll discover how God strategically placed each tribe in perfect position before they set out towards the land of Canaan.

The Order of the Levites

Whitney Capps

The LORD also said to Moses, ‘I have taken the Levites from among the Israelites in place of the first male offspring of every Israelite woman. The Levites are mine.’ - Numbers 3

Similar to Numbers 1 and 2, Numbers 3 focuses on a numeric assessment of God’s people. Here the accounting is of the tribe of the Levites, who have been chosen by God to care for the temple and to represent the people before His presence there.

So Moses, Aaron and the leaders of Israel counted all the Levites by their clans and families. All the men from thirty to fifty years of age who came to do the work of serving and carrying the tent of meeting. - Numbers 4

In Numbers 4, Moses continues the census ordered by God of the Israelite community. But this census is different.

In 1979 archaeologists digging at an ancient burial site near Mount Zion in the old city of Jerusalem discovered a tiny rolled scroll encased in silver. This small necklace-type accessory, called a phylactery, was worn in life and death by faithful Israelites.

Leah DiPascal

For the LORD had said to Moses, ‘Each day one leader is to bring his offering for the dedication of the altar.’ - Numbers 7

After the tabernacle was completed, Moses anointed and consecrated the altar, all the furnishing and utensils before the Lord. A chosen leader from each tribe was instructed to bring gifts to the Lord, which totaled six wagons and 12 oxen.

Lives Given in Service

Krista Williams

From among all the Israelites, I have given the Levites as gifts to Aaron and his sons to do the work at the tent of meeting on behalf of the Israelites and to make atonement for them so that no plague will strike the Israelites when they go near the sanctuary. - Numbers 8

Aaron and his sons were the priests in charge of the ministry of the tabernacle. The Levites were a special gift from God given to the priests to help and assist them in their service to the Lord.

It had been only three days since the Israelites set out from Mount Sinai. As they made their way to Kadesh Barnea, an oasis on the southern border of Canaan, the people started to complain about their circumstances.
