Conformed or Transformed?

Lysa TerKeurst

Day: 6 | Plan: Genesis

Today's Reading: Genesis 6

Genesis 6:9b (NIV) “Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God.”

I absolutely love the way this verse describes Noah. Righteous. Different than those around him. A faithful follower of God. He had issues like we all do, but his obedience to the Lord shines from the pages of God’s Word and will forever be recorded as such.

But while we applaud him now, we need to remember Noah stuck out like a sore thumb at the time. We know this because Scripture contrasts him against the other people of that day several times:

  • 2 Peter 2:5, “[God] did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others.”
  • Hebrews 11:7b, “By his faith [Noah] condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith.”

So, Noah’s obedience to God probably didn’t make him the most popular guy … but it did allow him to find “favor in the eyes of the LORD” (Genesis 6:8)

It can be hard to be a Christian today when the message we get from the world is …

Don’t cause waves.

Don’t stand out.

Don’t stand up.

Don’t rock the boat of norm in any way.

Just go with the flow.

But that’s not what God calls us to. He calls us to a Noah-like faith. One that follows the wisdom found in Romans 12:2a, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Not that we walk around criticizing others but we are steadfast in our pure pursuit of living out the truths and grace from Scriptures.

Conformed or transformed? The choice is ours. If I want to be a sold-out somebody for God, I have to break away from the everybody crowd.

Prayer: Father, I’m tired of conforming to the patterns of this world. Transform me through the power of your Holy Spirit so that like Noah I can find favor in your eyes. In Jesus’ name, amen.
