A Do-Over

Krista Williams

In spite of this, you did not trust in the Lord your God, who went ahead of you on your journey, in a fire by night and in a cloud by day, to search out places for you to camp and to show you the way you should go. - Deuteronomy 1

We are not a people who like to dwell on failure. So why would Moses, one of the greatest leaders ever, begin a message with a reminder of the peoples’ failure?

Division of the Land East of the Jordan

Wendy Blight

I commanded you at that time: ‘The Lord your God has given you this land to take possession of it. But all your able-bodied men, armed for battle, must cross over ahead of the other Israelites. - Deuteronomy 3

Has someone you loved and respected ever questioned your motives, especially when you were doing the right thing? Some of the Israelites found themselves in this dilemma with Moses.

Guarding Over God’s Instructions

Leah DiPascal

Now, Israel, hear the decrees and laws I am about to teach you. Follow them so that you may live and may go in and take possession of the land the Lord, the God of your ancestors, is giving you. Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the Lord your God that I give you. - Deuteronomy 4

In Deuteronomy 4, Moses continues speaking to the people of Israel in what is considered by scholars to be the first of three final speeches he delivers before passing on to be with the Lord. As this young generation stands poised to enter the Promised Land without him, Moses implores them to get it right and not repeat the destructive sins of their forefathers.

This is what you are to do to them: Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones, cut down their Asherah poles and burn their idols in the fire. For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession. - Deuteronomy 7

In the Ancient Near East, God’s people were unique in many ways. Perhaps the most significant difference is Israel’s monotheism.

The Pathway of Humility

He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. - Deuteronomy 8

Beware of Pride

Wendy Blight

It is not because of your righteousness or your integrity that you are going in to take possession of their land; but on account of the wickedness of these nations, the Lord your God will drive them out before you, to accomplish what he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. - Deuteronomy 9

Sometimes the taste of victory evokes pride. Our human hearts tend towards taking credit for our success, reasoning it’s due to our strength, wisdom, skill or goodness.

And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. - Deuteronomy 10

Inside the walls of our church it is easy to have faith and show our love for God. There is a problem with inside church faith: we have to eventually walk out of church into our community.

What is Worship?

Wendy Blight

The Lord your God will cut off before you the nations you are about to invade and dispossess. But when you have driven them out and settled in their land, and after they have been destroyed before you, be careful not to be ensnared by inquiring about their gods, saying, ‘How do these nations serve their gods? We will do the same.’ - Deuteronomy 12

Deuteronomy 12 continues what many call a restatement of the Law, but it was more than that. It was an invitation.

They shall have no inheritance among their fellow Israelites; the Lord is their inheritance, as he promised them. - Deuteronomy 18
