Day: 28 | Plan: 1-2 Samuel

Today’s Reading: 1 Samuel 28

1 Samuel 28:6-7a (NIV)He inquired of the LORD, but the LORD did not answer him by dreams or Urim or prophets. Saul then said to his attendants, ‘Find me a woman who is a medium, so I may go and inquire of her.’”

As we’ve journeyed through the life of Saul, we’ve witnessed the sad consequences of his strong-willed personality and defiant behavior. Saul’s determination to do things on his own terms played a big part in his downfall.

In today’s reading, Saul did the unthinkable. He consulted a medium, which was completely forbidden by God. In fact, Scripture tells us this kind of practice is considered detestable (Deuteronomy 18:10-12) and defiles a person. (Leviticus 19:31)

The word defile means to contaminate or corrupt. That Saul would choose to participate in the corruptible act of consulting a medium – even after he himself banned all mediums and psychics from the land of Israel – gives us a clear indication of just how far Saul had fallen. (1 Samuel 28:3b)

Instead of waiting on God for guidance and direction, Saul impatiently plowed forward tripping over his own disobedience, which landed him in a spiritual pit he couldn’t climb out of. Saul knew that God had stated He would set His face against anyone who turned to mediums (Leviticus 20:6) but he ignored God’s warnings and paid huge consequences.

The Word of God clearly states that any occult activity is forbidden in the life of God’s people. Dabbling in it is extremely dangerous and can put a person’s life at great risk – physically and spiritually.

What may appear to some as seemingly innocent and curious play – like experimenting with horoscopes, palm reading, fortune telling, getting advice from a medium or playing with Ouija boards – is actually a dangerous open door to the spiritual realm of demonic forces.

When a person tries to gain insight or revelation from these kinds of practices they are acting out in direct opposition to God’s commands and through it attempting to belittle Him.

Saul’s attempts to go around God by seeking wisdom, revelation and power through a medium came at a great price. It cost him his life, the lives of his three sons and many others. (1 Samuel 31:1-2)

As believers, we must always seek God for wisdom and guidance and never look to any kind of occult activities for answers. Our faith must be grounded in God’s Word and not persuaded by things that can harm us or dishonor God. All that we need to know comes from Him and is readily available to us through His Word.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I want to live in the light of Your truth and walk in ways that honor You. Thank You for teaching and training me through Your Word so that I can grow in wisdom and live in obedience to Your will. Cleanse my heart and remove any temptations that would cause me to seek out divine revelation through other means instead of coming straight to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
